Through these episodes the soundtrack meanders on with a core of light piano and orchestrated numbers setting the mood. An organ-backed choral song performed in sedate church choir style becomes a recurring theme, especially in episode 14, albeit with lyrics that do not even remotely resemble an actual translated church hymn. The initial opener and closer continue through episode 13, after which a new fully-animated opener and a part-animated, part-live-action closer replace them. New opener “Kuchiburu Hakuchumu,” also by Aki Misato, is a solid number that falls just a bit short of equaling the original, while the gimmicky new closer, done by the same pair of singers as the first one, is a decidedly inferior lightly jazzy effort backed by awkward behavior by the singers. Vocal performances in the Japanese dub maintain the decent but unexciting performances heard in previous volumes.

The first 35 minutes of this 45-minute OVA episode correspond exactly to episodes 5 and 6 of the Hellsing TV series, down even to duplicating lines in some places. With its last few minutes it begins to diverge from the TV series content, heading in a direction that the TV series was unable to go because the Millenium Nazis content had not been written yet at the time the TV series went into production. It offers the promise of completely fresh content for episode 3, but that is, at the least, several months off; here we are only dealing with episode 2.

If you are one of the many people who were absolutely thrilled with the first OVA episode's take on the Hellsing manga then the second episode should delight you to no end, as it takes everything that was great about the first episode and piles it on even thicker. If, however, you were in the minority of fans who actually found the first episode to be a disappointment, then the second episode will do little to change your opinion. For better or worse, the content is just more of the same: lots of maniacal grins, blood splatter, cool weapons, foul language, Seras caricatures, and gory violence punctuated by the occasional odd comedy relief scene. And oh, yes, somewhere in all of that is actually a bit of plot and something about a mysterious organization of Nazis behind it all, but who really cares as long as you're having that much fun?

King of Bandit Jing is something of a conundrum. Beneath its polished and abstract artistic trappings lies the basic formula for an everyday shounen action series. Jing is, essentially, the Himura Kenshin or Luffy D. Monkey or Uzamaki Naruto of his series; the best (fighter, pirate, ninja, baker, construction worker) in the world, who goes around fighting for truth, justice, and all that stuff shonen heroes fight for. He even has a spunky talking animal sidekick. While the episodes on volume two do little to stray from the established story formula, King of Bandit Jing has one thing going for it that sets it apart from the vast sea of Kenshin-alikes out there: art direction so unique it defies description.

Jing is worth watching for the visuals alone. It's impossible to name all the different sources this series is pulling from to create its visual style. In episode five alone, you can see visual references to The Beatles' Yellow Submarine, The Cabinet of Dr. Caligari, Salvador Dali's various works and a whole host of others. If that sounds strange for an anime series, it is; frequently the show lapses into fits of nearly anarchic visuals, eschewing common anime technique for a totally chaotic and abstract experience. Jing's adventures in ‘Technicolor Town’, a city washed out in bleeding reds, lime greens and baby blues is a visually stunning artistic device and should not be missed, particularly if you're an art student.

Unfortunately, King of Bandit Jing amounts to a whole lot of flash and very little substance. At its core, Jing still follows the shonen formula to a tee. Each episode is basically an encapsulated adventure, wherein Jing tries to get some unattainable treasure that winds up getting destroyed or left behind for something more important. Everyone learns an important moral lesson (Jing is usually trying to steal something that symbolizes some nebulous human concept that's considered unattainable, like lost love, eternal life, that sort of thing… OK, we get it), Kir hits on the closest woman, and then fires a cannon from his mouth at whatever monster appears near the end of the episode. The end. Yawn. We've seen this sort of thing before, and if it weren't for the visual panache this show displays, there wouldn't be much to write home about.

It's unfortunate, really, that the art director, who obviously had ambitious plans for the series' visual style, got stuck with such tired material. Otherwise, this could have been a classic for the ages to appreciate. The production values are all top-notch, which is a good thing, considering that with such challenging art design, poor animation could have brought this entire production down in flames. Jing and his friends are animated with the utmost of care. Kir, the standout character design who almost looks as though he were ripped from the panels of a Krazy Kat cartoon, seems to suffer from a lower frame rate than the rest of the cast, but it might just be his bizarre design affecting how he moves on screen. Closeups are rendered lovingly by the animators, with flowing hair and shining lips and so forth. The music isn't half-bad either, provided you can take a little rock music and the occasional violin solo.

The dub is passable, if not amazing. Jing's voice is a little sedate, but it's hard to blame the actor, given some of the dialogue he has to work with (“Will we find a paradise of treasure, or a frozen hell? Only the angels know for sure.” Oy.). Kir's actor sounds like he's doing his best Gilbert Gottfried impression, which is both fitting and highly annoying. Competent ADV regulars voice the rest of the (totally inconsequential) cast, and they do a good job bringing the show to life. ADV's dub work has done nothing but improve since the late 90s, and King of Bandit Jing is no exception. If you're a dub fan, give it a shot.

Overall, King of Bandit Jing is a rote exercise in shonen formula action, tied up in an exceptionally pretty package and given a high glossy sheen (and a little whiff of artistic pretension). Don't let that fool you, though; art design students and art fanatics will find a lot to love about the visuals, but little else to keep them in their seats. Shonen fans will probably find something to love, but won't stick around for long. It's an odd little show that doesn't have overwhelming appeal to any particular audience. Here's hoping the storyline improves over the final two volumes.

After the delicate dance of heightening mysteries and piecemeal revelation of the first half of the series finished, the burning question was whether the second half could survive once there were no teasing half-truths or dark conspiracies to cement one's attention. This volume lays to rest any such speculation. Through volumes of massive exposés and alien history, Fantastic Children has successfully made the transition from a quiet tale of inexplicably intertwined destinies to a grand adventure of galactic scale.

The show hasn't discarded its first half. The entire cast of characters is present, their pasts and purposes now laid bare, but their stories far from finished. The narrative threads of the first half—the Ged Institute, Detective Cooks, Thoma and Helga, the Children of Befort and Dumas—all continue on, now woven into a single plot. The paradoxes and dilemmas faced by all of the characters still lurk, although the plight of the Children and their human families remains on the back burner for the majority of the volume. Even the onion-skin exposure of character truths continues with a revelation that, while not unexpected, is guaranteed to drop your heart directly into your stomach acids.

But, like the characters, the story has changed. The stakes have increased, the action quotient is higher, and—aside from one final mystery—the story has shifted from slowly unfolding puzzle to straightforward adventure. Fear not, for the adventure—like the puzzle before it—is firmly rooted in the emotional realities of its protagonists; its climax is a mental rather than physical battle, and its conclusion quiet and affecting rather than explosive and exciting. It may be adventure, complete with the trappings—fist fights, life-threatening developments, tense confrontations, and even a maiden in distress, but it's an adventure grounded in its characters and wrapped in a tragedy of Shakespearean proportions. And it's every bit as dark and delicious as it ever was.

The visual execution is almost as flawless as the narrative construction. There are obvious earmarks of quality: a general lack of noticeable shortcuts; characters that move with natural ease through their surroundings; an awe-inspiring spacecraft rendered in minute detail; settings that feel real and interactive—not backgrounds but spaces in which people exist. But the care with which it was made also manifests itself in more subtle ways: the expressiveness of its deceptively simple character designs, the haunting beauty of everyday settings after the grand vistas and unfamiliar technologies of Greecia, the eerie synchronized way that the Children of Befort move, the way Wonder dips under the additional weight of Thoma dropping onto it. The very occasional indistinctness of some of the background art (usually when moving through forests), and a shortage of truly dynamic scenes sets it apart from top-of-the-list big-budget efforts, but that's merely nit-picking an otherwise excellent production.

The soundtrack, with its slow, deliberate, mildly asymmetrical background music, quietly memorable main themes, lyrical opening, and beautiful, achingly sad closing song is the kind of music that would sound great while wrapped in a blanket on a rainy day. It also sounds great while watching the series.

The supreme importance of good acting is never quite so apparent as when it gets botched. And botch it the dub does. Actors sound as if they are going through the motions without really bothering to act or understand their characters. Some speak in dull monotones, even at the worst of times (check out Gherta's monologue at the end of episode 23), others have bizarre inflections (why does Hesma sound as if he's constantly fighting a bad case of constipation?), and almost all of them have halting, unprofessional delivery at least part of the time. The problem extends beyond just the acting. Some lines are recorded without the proper atmospheric effects (e.g. echoes) such that they sound like, well, actors speaking into mikes. Thorny, complex emotions, action and high drama alike get smothered under the bland, uninspired dub. It isn't wholesale butchery (that would require changing the dialogue so that Chitto is the main character and giving everyone else nasal voices with heavy East-European accents), but... Whether one sheds a tear or two during the Japanese will depend on one's constitution, but I guarantee that the only tears anyone will shed during the English version will be in mourning for all of the fine moments killed dead by awful acting.

Sometimes the elements of a series come together just right or wrong for viewers to be able to tell from the first couple of minutes whether or not they're going to be watching a quality series. Shana is an example of a series that comes out right. It's evident before the first opener arrives that this one is a step above the normal magically-oriented high school fare, and by the end of the slam-bang first episode most viewers are likely to be hooked. So strongly and effectively does that first episode present the show's concept that a viewer is almost compelled to immediately watch the next episode just to see what becomes of the situation established for the male lead. How is he going to deal with finding out that he's not only already dead, but ultimately he'll completely fade from existence, leaving nothing behind?

The full impact of this situation hits in episode 2 as Yuji pesters Shana for a more complete explanation of the situation and must deal with the reality of one of his classmates being a fading Torch. After such an active first episode, the entire second episode is used only to explore the ramifications of the whole Torch situation and what it means for a Torch to just fade away. Making such a dramatic transition so early in the series is a bold move, but it beautifully brings home the crucial central conceits of the story and gives the feel that, just maybe, this series actually is going to have some substance to it.

With the third and fourth episodes the series takes on a slightly lighter tone in some scenes as it shows signs that it may be headed in a more conventional direction. Shana is quite the cutie, after all, and not being human means she's outside of normal standards of behavior for high school girls, so it's only natural that she'd be exploited for typical gags involving spending the night in the same room as Yuji or inserting herself into his class at school. The opener also supports this assumption, as it makes the series out to be more of a romantic action-comedy than it currently is. What is decidedly not typical, however, is the priceless way Shana acts in class or her blunt and acerbic personality. Also sure to liven things up for future volumes is the arrival of a second Flame Haze named Margery Daw (what a name!), who is guided by a rather wild talking book named Stupid-Marco (whereas Shana is guided/advised by a talking pendant).

The digitally-rendered character designs use a sharp look to enhance a very classic and typical anime style, one which makes the eyes extra-big and prominent but de-emphasizes bust sizes on its high school girls. Shana's use of a trenchcoat early on gives her more of a distinctive bad-girl appearance, as do the faintly flaming highlights when she goes into battle mode. Though she later appears stripped down, the actual fan service present is minimal. Most other human (or human-looking) designs are eye-pleasing but not standouts. The RIN-NE appearing in the first episode are a bit more inventive but not greatly so. Background art is quite good and well-integrated, and the use of a red haze in battle scenes enhances the flame theme of the heroine. Animation is also generally good, although the battle scenes use a lot of shortcuts. Digital effects are used to varying degrees of success, with simple things such as steam off coffee looking very obvious while the cinders-off-the-hair effect of Shana in battle mode is more impressive.

The musical score varies widely between orchestrated numbers enhanced by choral backing and purely synthesized numbers, with some piano-based pieces thrown in for good measure. It's a somewhat eclectic sound but is used very effectively. The synth-pop opener is a solid, enthusiastic (if not entirely original-sounding) number, while the series regularly does a superb job of segueing into its even better dance-beat synth-heavy closer; you might not realize how significant this is until you compare it to a series which doesn't do it well, like, say, Haré+Guu.

Ocean Group's English dub is populated by many Inuyasha second-stringers, most notably Paul “Naraku” Dobson (as Alastor) and Janyse “Kagura” Daud as Margery Daw. As with other recent efforts, though, Ocean Group uses an independent casting agency to come up with a broader mix of talent. Kristian Ayre does a fine job as Yuji, but the key performance, and the real reason to give the dub a try, is Tabitha St. Germain (probably best-known as the English voice for Fllay in Mobile Suit Gundam Seed) in the title role. Her interpretation of Shana brings through the character's callous bluntness in a way much more conducive to the English language, making it one of the more interesting vocal performances of the year. Even Shana's trademark “Shut Up! Shut Up! Shut Up!” is done well. Overall, casting is reasonably accurate and there are no miscues in performances. The dub script isn't the tightest, but sounds smooth and doesn't stray too far.

Within the first few minutes of the first episode it becomes apparent that a synopsis like the one above or on the back cover cannot do this series justice. The concept may sound like a blending of two common elements of sci-fi anime – the bad-ass action heroine with super-human abilities and an alien/human symbiosis – but in execution it becomes something wholly different. It does have its requisite share of action scenes, but they feel more like devices for moving the plot along than the focus of the series. This is, instead, a story much more about relationships, both between parent and child and between a matched pair of aliens who have integrated into human form.

To call Kurau a love story would not exactly be accurate, as the Kurau/Christmas dynamic does not have romantic overtones in the traditional sense. As another Agent spying on them notes at one point, though, neither do they have the “older/younger sister” familial relationship that Kurau claims to others. Theirs is a relationship rarely seen in anime: a deeply caring, achingly needy love, the kind which makes palpable Kurau's loneliness before Christmas appears and the joyful change to her attitude when Christmas finally does awaken and take human form. Given the way her adult personality is established in the latter half of the first episode, the change Kurau undergoes is dramatic and startling, but it so closely mirrors the kind of attitude adjustment some people undergo when they first become parents that it feels completely credible.

Though it fades into the background after the first episode, the father/daughter relationship involving Kurau is equally heartfelt. The depth of feeling Dr. Amami has for his daughter quickly becomes apparent in his devastation over what happens to Kurau and his trepidation over how much of the daughter he knows is actually present in the alien who has apparently blended with his daughter. Is his daughter's soul really a part of the Rynax, or is the Rynax merely a caretaker in Kurau's body? And how much does that actually matter? Difficult questions, to which the series provides no easy answers.

The only other recurring character who has been well-established by the end of the volume is Doug, a cop-turned-Agent who has his own parental issues. He has been hired to spy on Kurau and Christmas without knowing who and what they are, but who his employer is and why he has been hired to do this remains a mystery throughout this volume. Here the story takes a more ordinary turn, as all the early indicators suggest that he's a basically good guy who is going to wind up helping/working with Kurau and Christmas at some point (although that point does not come up in the first four episodes). Beyond him the characters introduced so far are your generic bunch of wild cards, thugs, unscrupulous corporate types, and severe, dedicated police-types.

Well-executed storytelling strikes a pleasing balance between character development and action scenes, which are dramatic and reasonably tense without being overly flashy. Rather than trying to be spectacular, the series places heavier emphasis on Kurau's more subtle use of her abilities and her commitment to keep her promise to her “father,” which involves keeping Kurau's body from being harmed. Because of that, none of the action scenes take on the overblown feel too often seen in such series. The best scenes are, in fact, the ones where Kurau is simply flying.

As good as the storytelling is, the excellent visuals are as much a part of the appeal. Good animation supports quality action scenes, while the pretty artistry further solidifies the position of BONES as one of Japan's top animation studios. Background, vehicle, and equipment designs favor a classic futuristic look and are invariably well-drawn. Despite a couple of tiny rough spots that always seem to creep into BONES productions, the character designs are equally outstanding. Kurau differs greatly from the typical anime heroine by maintaining her decidedly tomboyish look even in adulthood, while the darling Christmas is as much pretty as cute in her snappy purple-toned outfit. Characters in other key roles look equally good, although a slight drop-off in quality of rendering can be noticed in some lesser roles. Violence, though present in sufficient amount, usually gets intense rather than graphic, and not a bit of real fan service can be found; this is not a series that has any intention of selling itself on cuteness or visceral elements, but one who comes into the series expecting those may still be charmed by the level of quality in other elements.

Alternately complementing and detracting from the rest is a spectacularly inconsistent soundtrack. At its best it is so utterly brilliant in conveying the spirit and soul of the storytelling that it almost overwhelms the viewer with its mood, while at other times (most commonly in action scenes) it sounds like twangy, hackneyed late '80s/early '90s synthesized retreads, so the grade given below is more an average of its peaks and valleys than a consistent score. The closer “Moonlight” has a gentle, faintly ethereal sound of it vaguely reminiscent of the work of Enya, while the opener may remind some viewers of the opening vocals for Chobits.

The worthiness of the dub produced by ADV largely comes down to a matter of personal taste. The style and caliber of the performances are generally consistent with the originals, and the English script never strays too much, so likeability will depend mostly on how good a fit you find Monica Rial to be for Kurau and Jessica Boone to be for Christmas. Neither is brilliant, but both emote sufficiently well and Monica does a good job of adjusting her pitch to account for the age and persona changes of her character, so normal dub fans should find them satisfying.

ADV provides a solid (if unspectacular) package of Extras for this first volume, with on-disk Extras including staples like clean opener and closer, a promotional video, a very extensive production art gallery, and a glossary of terms listed as “Key Words.” Also back, after somewhat of a hiatus recently on ADV productions, are the “Next Volume” previews. Included in the case is a three-panel double-sided GPO Investigation Report, which contains the original DVD cover art, staff and seiyuu interviews, and “Director's Memories” sketches.

Following on the heels of Le Chevalier D'Eon, it looks like ADV has its second big winner for the year in this one. It may have languished for more than 2½ years since initially being licensed, but thankfully ADV was finally able to come through, offering a thoroughly beautiful first episode which sets the stage for an unconventional take on a super-powered sci-fi heroine. Great visuals complement a story as much about relationships as action, creating a superb opening volume for a highly promising series.

If you have not been watching this series so far, do not pick it up with this volume; go back and watch the previous two volumes first. Moreso than with most series, it is absolutely essential that a viewer sees how things have gotten to this point to be able to understand and appreciate why things are going on the way they are in this volume.

In bringing the story of Koi Kaze to a close, “Decisions” raises some heavy questions. Inappropriate crushes are not unusual for teenagers (though Nanoka's is, admittedly, particularly inappropriate), but is that all it is for Nanoka or is she genuinely in love? How much blame does Koshiro deserve for the direction in which things have developed? He is the adult here, so isn't it his obligation to be the responsible one and put his foot down, no matter his own feelings? How much do his feelings count? Does Kaname have a moral obligation to interfere when she gets wind of what's going on, or should she mind her own business? And, most importantly, is this a relationship worthy of respect, since it's something both parties clearly want, or is it just plain wrong? Most of these questions have no easy or clear answers, and Koi Kaze leaves figuring them out entirely up to the viewer. It simply shows what happens without really taking a stance on whether or not any of this should be happening. By doing so the staff has maintained the story as a superbly-written work of forbidden love which might make some viewers uncomfortable, rather than the edgy and offensive piece it easily could have been.

Needless to say, Agito succeeds in saving the day, Shunack sees the error of his ways before getting swallowed up by a mutant tree, and Toola decides to let go of the past. Whoopie. Could this film have been any more predictable? Although it is supposed to be a picture-perfect happy ending, it just doesn't feel like one: the story is wholly unable to convince me that trying to become one with the Forest is preferable to what came before. Indeed, it is never a credit to the creator's original intentions when viewers start favoring the villain's point of view over that of the hero's, and sure enough I found myself hoping against hope that Shunack would succeed. Would you really want to live in a world where you need to negotiate with sentient trees for every precious bucket of water? Didn't think so. Three cheers for normalcy, gosh darn it! Besides, the rest of the characters, Agito, Toola, and the Neutral City citizens alike, are one-dimensional personalities, easy to imagine as so much cannon fodder.

Seeing an ambitious project like this one fall flat on its face is rarely a pleasant experience, and the highly ambitious Origin ~Spirits of the Past~ is so outright awful it actually has proven impossible to laugh off its many narrative misfires. Though the quality of the animation is remarkably good even for a feature film, and the ethereal New Age-ish soundtrack, while certainly an acquired taste to say the least, matches the tone of the visuals, GONZO's heroic effort has been utterly wasted on yet another anime that best belongs on the trash heap of history.

In fact, the American voice actors don't seem able to muster the least excitement with regards to the whole endeavor, either. All performances are delivered either in monotone or shout—nothing between. That their Japanese counterparts manage to tough it out and that the subtitles are readable and well-executed are but small consolations.

The FUNimation Special Edition release of the film includes a bonus DVD with fifty minutes of additional material, most notably an in-depth production documentary. Too bad, at an MSRP of $39.99, it isn't worth remembering where Origin ~Spirits of the Past~ came from. I advise you, dear reader, to pretend that it never existed in the first place.

If Twin Signal has any sort of appeal, it must be from its sheer averageness. An average plot, executed with average jokes and average action, and brought together by an average art style, make it a "safe" title guaranteed to appeal to most young readers. It has all the sophistication of a Saturday morning kids' cartoon (or, keeping in context, a newspaper comic strip), which is both a strength and a weakness. The simplicity makes the stories a breeze to zip through—even if you can't quite pick out the characters, even if the action gets muddled, it's easy to understand that everyone is fighting over Signal while Signal fights against everyone else. At the same time, however, there's absolutely no effort to dig deeper into the issues between a boy and his robot. Instead, it stays stuck firmly on average.

The premise of this story is so common that it needs no explanation or discussion—for details, just go back to Tetsujin 28 and follow its line of descendants—and so the execution is what makes or breaks the series. Most of the time, the episodic adventure format serves well as a guiding principle: Signal rescues a robot-fearing police officer. Chibi-Signal gets kidnapped by wannabe robot engineers. Chibi-Signal gets transported to a fantasy world. Repeat as many times as needed. The only attempt at development is towards the end of this volume, when Pulse first shows up and Signal finally takes on someone equal to his skill level. The Pulse-Signal rivalry helps to introduce some essential back-story involving Nobuhiko, his father and his grandfather, but it doesn't make up for a whole 300 other pages of silly bouncy battle-robot goofiness.

It takes some kind of talent, though, to make that goofiness appealing. The comedy is fast-paced and delivers the gags with classic slapstick timing; the action is fun to watch and refuses to get bogged down in the mechanics of fighting. A simple core of characters allows for comedy to be built on personality types: courageous but trigger-happy Signal, his off-the-wall miniature form, panicky and pragmatic Nobuhiko, and of course the obligatory eccentric genius, Grandpa. The supporting cast is equally colorful and entertaining, although they really start to stretch the limits of suspension of disbelief: cute little robotic policemen, a robot-obsessed school principal and his nutty, mechanically minded daughter, and even an aristocratic vampire. Silliness and exaggeration abound, but maybe too much so, as many of the events and characters in the story fall right off the logic scale.

The name Watase Yuu will sound familiar to many fans. Known for her pretty boys and cute girls, Watase gained popularity in Japan and the United States for her manga, Fushigi Yuugi. Luckily, she's back again in yet another fantasy work, Ayashi no Ceres. In the third volume released by Pioneer, the viewer is led on a thrilling adventure full of action, romance, and brief moments of pure comedy. Ayashi no Ceres is a fun series, but alas, the viewer is unable to enjoy it. Something apparently must have gone wrong in the DVD mastering process, as the quality is quite shabby. Whether it was this particular disc, an incompatibility with certain DVD players, or perhaps a whole shipment of disc, the picture quality leaves much to be desired. When played on a Sony DVP S560D player, every so often, the subtitles and the picture will pixelate, followed by brief moments of color and sound loss. The second volume of Ceres was recalled by Pioneer for flaws, and perhaps this volume may also be a good candidate for recall. Sometimes, the disc would even skip when it changed chapters, but the occurrence was rare. Incidentally, when checked on a different brand DVD player, the picture quality was fine. Playing the disc on another Sony player of the same model showed the same problem, however.

Although the episodes themselves were in poor condition, the rest of the disc is fine. The third volume comes packed with many fun extras. It contains production sketches from the series, and also a character gallery where one can access individual characters and browse through background information about them, as well as line drawings. On the downside, the drawings are small and relatively hard to see on the screen. Nevertheless, it is still convenient to be able to access information about a character's life and past. Also, if one wanted to find the profile of a certain character, the person would have no problem locating it, as the full character gallery comes standard on all the Ayashi no Ceres DVDs. An extra exclusive to this disc is an interview with Watase Yuu, which is a nice touch. In it, she discusses some of the influences in her works, as well as a section about the "hot male characters" in her manga. Overall, the extras add a nice touch to the disc and luckily, they come error free without any of the problems the episodes did.

(Fushigi Yuugi fans will notice that Tomokazu Seki is back in a small role; he's even using his high-pitched, trademark Chichiri voice.) There was one odd moment in the intro to the first episode, however, where the Japanese and English language tracks were slightly messed up. When the Japanese track was on, the voice could barely be heard in the background. What was heard was an English voice saying something about Japan in the foreground. Initially, a viewer's reaction might be that perhaps the two language tracks were mixed. A check of the English dialogue track through that passage shows that there in fact is no English dialogue; it is instead replaced by a string of French. The section only lasts a few seconds, but there's no logical explanation for it other than perhaps something went wrong in the mastering stage-but why the French? Aside from that strange section, and the occasional moments where the sound faded out, the actual acting was fine. The English cast left a little to be desired, however. While a few of the male actors delivered somewhat believable lines, many of the actors and actresses were bland and unemotional. Their script wasn't much better, as sometimes the lines were changed so much that the intent of the scenes was altered.

The kingdom of Forland is under attack by the mad scientist Professor Akamashi and his twin androids Anna and Yuna, who are intent on taking over the kingdom. Naturally the two individuals involved also have radically different personalities. Alita is well-mannered and genteel, in every sense the perfect princess; Falis is anything but that. Whereas Alita is much more timid, however, Falis is a take-charge, kick-butt-and-take- names-later kind of gal, and her confidence and skill make her into the ideal princess for defending a kingdom against marauding threats. Far less suited is she to addressing Alita's subjects, however, as her first such endeavor abundantly proves. Despite being an equal participant in the soul transfer, though, Alita quickly takes a back seat to the much more colorful Falis, who is the focal point of most of what happens. That is, of course, because it's so much cooler to watch a young lady in full princess regalia acting ill-mannered and swinging a katana with great force and precision. The fanboys out there also get their share of moe and general cuteness content from the android twins, but beyond them and the butler Jodo, the rest of the cast just fades into the background. This is much more a one-woman story than an ensemble cast piece.

Kyo kara Maoh!'s conclusion is serious stuff. Betrayal, defeat, corrupted souls and impending worldwide doom—not the stuff of fluffy bedtime stories. Yuri must confront his inner weakness, the Originators play dice with Wolfram's life, and Murata reveals some unpleasant truths about the mission he shared with the Great One of old. It's heavy stuff with nary a boys-love gag in sight; anything less would have been anticlimactic. But it still isn't what Kyo kara Maoh! does best. As personable as the pretty-boy cast is, there isn't much to them outside of their central quirks. It's hard to care much what happens to them, and even harder to believe that the softhearted writers would actually do something irrevocably nasty to them. It's a facsimile of a climax, going through all the right motions, but without the muscle to make them work. There is never any doubt as to the ultimate outcome of the conflict with the Originators, and consequently no tension or excitement as the climax unfolds.

That doesn't mean that the series is without its little surprises along the way. Ploddingly predictable as the final act is, director Junji Nishimura is veteran enough to wring a few interesting scenes from it. The action in the last few episodes, though brief, is shockingly well executed (when compared to the sad attempts at action in episodes past), with a few gorgeous slo-mo charges and spectacular magical showcases for the series' superior art and character design. Nishimura wisely emphasizes Yuri's inner conflict—which unfolds largely in stills inside an eerily empty simulacrum of his home—over epic warfare that the budget is plainly incapable of supporting. He also makes the most of the continually inscrutable Murata, whose wild-card behavior not only drives the final act, but also provides the only genuine surprise these volumes have to offer.

The ripe score works pretty well so long as Nishimura's flourishes coincide with Yoichiro Yoshikawa's big fantasy compositions. When they do, sound and visuals combine to evoke something very close to epic—soaring magic and soaring orchestras synchronizing for a moment of pure fantasy eye-candy. Unfortunately, the remainder of the time Nishimura employs silence—particularly during Yuri's inner struggle—more effectively than he does music. The score is often intrusive and on more than one occasion clearly at odds with the mood of a scene.

Kyo kara Maoh!'s English dub is far from the worst you'll hear. Patrick Seitz is a solid addition to the cast as Shori, and even if he loses some of Yuri's wry spunk during the scenes with the Great One, Yuri Lowenthal's straightforward performance is well suited to the somber tone of these episodes. But neither is this one of the better dubs you're likely to hear. It isn't unusual for characters to get their inflections off or flatten their delivery, and for all the well-intentioned sprucing of the duller dialogue, the script is still too staid for it's own good.

With the success of Pokémon, several other children's anime shows have been released on U.S. television to help capitalize off its success. One of the less popular of the bunch, which seems to have come out of nowhere, would be Flint The Time Detective. While definitely above other Saturday morning cartoon drivel, Flint is average quality at best.

Being a Saturday morning children's show, Flint is unfortunately dub only. However, being that this is aimed strictly at children, it isn't too bad. Besides, the dub is handled quite well; the voices fit and the acting is at par.

Way too many dark colors were used for the packaging on this DVD release. With the happy cartoony cast, you'd expect something a little more bright, more along the lines of the Pokémon releases. However, the case itself is black and the background on the backside is of pure dark colors. Happy children's shows should be nice and bright, not dark and moody like this.

Flint's DVD menu is extremely basic. At the opening menu with a picture of Flint standing in the background, you're given the choice of picking which of the three episodes you want to watch or if you want to watch the trailer. Nothing too great here and the trailer, which isn't really even that exciting, is the only extra available.

After the first episode, which sets the story up, Flint The Time Detective becomes very formulaic. Flint along with his two normal buddies from the 25th century are called to go chasing after Petra Fina each episode to stop her from kidnapping the rare Pokémon-like timeshifters. During the episodes present on this disc the trio travels to both second century Japan as well as 16th century South America on their hunt for Petra Fina. The historical element is a plus and does keep things from getting too uninteresting.

Although the character designs do look good and many bright colors are used, the actual animation isn't topnotch. A low cel count is used and during some of the more complex scenes, the characters tend to look a lot like paper cut outs. It's what's expected from a children's show.

The comedy, although I can imagine it would work with children, is not always very funny. When a character says something is bologna, as in something being not true, lines like “It's not bologna, ham, or any other kind of meat product” are thrown it. It's the kind of humor that tries to be intelligent but doesn't completely hit with older audiences. Flint never takes itself too seriously and does try to make fun of a lot of things, which can be cute at times. Just don't expect this to be any kind of a riot if you're over the age of 10.

Flint The Time Detective isn't a bad show, it's just a children's show. If you have young ones in the house and insist they have a DVD collection of their own, purchasing Flint wouldn't be too bad of an idea. If Pokémon is their thing, they'd probably enjoy this at least a little. However, I can't really recommend this show to anyone else.

The talkative characters of Genshiken make for a challenging script, if only because of sheer word count—but Del Rey translator David Ury takes care of the job, maintaining good conversational flow and catching cultural references in the appendix. Sound effects remain intact, with small translations superimposed on or next to them. Also look for the "Project G" doujinshi collection in the back, which features Genshiken fan tributes by other manga-ka. As usual, Del Rey's production standards are top-notch; bright paper and solid inks guarantee that there's nothing to complain about in terms of print quality.

If DVD sales and Adult Swim ratings are anything to go by, then yes; sci-fi action is still a lucrative part of the anime market. But whether Geisters contributes anything to that already saturated field is questionable. The team of five heroes is a concept that just keeps coming back, and you don't even need to keep track of their names—the Geisters consist of the Leader, the Hothead, the Girl, the Comic Relief, and the Rebel. Added to the cliché mix are the usual political machinations—scientifically advanced nobles at odds with primitive but proud natives, while someone in the government plots a conspiracy. Believe it or not, the political parties and factions in the world of Geisters are even more simple-minded than the cartoon characters that populate contemporary American politics. Meanwhile, in each episode, the Geisters are obliged to go into action at least once, but these fights are always prefaced or followed by arguments that keep viewers up-to-date with the latest political and character drama (the early episodes also contain plenty of flashbacks about the team).

So is there anything redeeming about this generic post-apocalyptic shootout? Surprisingly, you might find yourself rooting for the main characters, cookie cutter as they are. With five episodes on the disc, there's enough room to develop a story that brings out their motivations. For example, we learn that Dean Honos (the Leader) is an upstanding young man coping with overwhelming responsibility. The Hothead, Alcion Fama, gets his fighting spirit from his childhood on the streets after his parents died. But what really makes the characters appealing is their familiarity. The classic five-team formula may be a shortcut for feeble minds, but it makes the heroes of Geisters feel like old friends from similar shows. Given the paint-by-numbers plotline and the overused setting, the characters certainly are the "last, best hope" for the story elements of this series.

The artwork is maddeningly inconsistent in Geisters: for every scene that's vibrantly colored and neatly drawn, there's one that looks like it was copied from Christopher Hart's amateurish "Manga Mania" books. The CGI is even more unspeakable. Frame Entertainment, the Korean studio that created the 3-D monsters and vehicles, makes no effort to blend them in with the Japanese animators' 2-D work. The result is that the Geisters always look like they're shooting at something that walked in from another series rather than a Creature from their own world. "Oh no! We must fire at that terrible piece of computer animation!" you can almost hear them say. Overall, however, the visuals in Geisters aren't awful: the character designs—despite being generic and dry—fit the tone of an action series, and the animation lies on the favorable side of the line between choppy and smooth. But every time the Creatures show up in their cheaply-CGIed glory... it's definitely safer to avert one's eyes.

This being Anime Crash's debut release, the distributor had to settle for acquiring a third-rate series, but their handling of the product could have been a lot better. Sure, the DVD didn't work the first time I tried to play it, and the ending of Episode 5 uses the opening music by mistake, but that's nothing compared to the wildly deviant dub script. Faithfulness to the Japanese translation is low on Anime Crash's list of priorities, as running the English audio with the subtitles reveals. The intent of the dialogue is still there, but many of the lines in the English dub are misplaced, poorly timed, or just plain wrong. The only real effort to match the subtitles comes when mouth-flapping is clearly visible; even then, the spoken lines tend to miss the syllable count or end up being the dialogue from one line ago or one line later. The dub script must have irritated the voice actors too, as they end up doing quite a few adlibs and lame attempts at gags.

Episodes 5 and 6 finish establishing the premise: Karin will regularly make lunches for Kenta as repayment for his assistance when her blood increases get out of hand. It is with the introduction of the flamboyantly bold, single-minded, and anachronistic Vampire Hunter Winner (the character previously blacked out in the intro) that the comedy aspect truly takes off, however. The mold for such characters was established long ago by Urusei Yatsura's Mendo Shutaro, and since then they have become a common feature in romantic comedies, but as with everything else Karin puts its own spin on a stereotype by placing it in the context of the vampire element. Not only is Winner the unabashed romantic rival that every anime romantic comedy seems to require, he's oblivious to the fact that the girl he is trying to woo is one of the creatures he's supposed to be hunting. In fact, Winner's inability to recognize vampires, and his ridiculously complicated tactics for catching vampires, quickly become running jokes.

One major side benefit also comes out of Winner's introduction: it elevates Maki, Karin's green-haired friend, from merely the role of the friend who misinterprets everything to a major supporting character who contributes greatly to the comic flow of the series. The way she plays off of Winner, and the way he perpetually fails to address her by name, provides the final push to increase the comedy to full speed. His activities and the scene where Kenta is taken to talk to Karin's parents also give the series the opportunity to cleverly explain the misconceptions about many supposed vampire weakness; crosses don't affect them because vampires are mostly atheists, garlic is only an issue because vampires have sensitive noses, and a wooden stake through the heart? “That would kill anyone,” Carrera Marker says, aghast, in response to Kenta's question about it. A scene where Carrera reads a young Karin and Anju a scary children's story about Vampire Hunters (the vampire equivalent of the boogeyman, apparently) adds an additional nice touch.

Although the comic caliber of the series is on the rise, the artistry persists as the series' Achilles heel. Bland, often crudely-drawn backgrounds support overly angular character designs that, except for Anju and perhaps Maki, are neither especially cute nor attractive, and Kenta looks too generic to distinguish himself. Winner also looks generic in his school uniform, but cuts a dashing (if also buffoonish) figure in his Vampire Hunter outfit, and Anju still has the loliGoth doll look going for her. Fan service stays strictly limited to the opener, and the content has so far avoided even an opportunity for it to come up. Not much is demanded of the animation, so it works passably well. The musical score more capably does its job, providing a nice complement to the storytelling.

Although the English dub does manage to correct some of its problems from the first volume, weak points remain. The English VA for Kenta delivers lines like he has a speech impediment, and Kenta's mother sounds entirely too much like a teenager. Chelsea Curto has softened the edge of her words enough to improve her performance as Karin to an acceptable level, however, and the distracting resonance which plagued her lines in the earliest episodes is gone. Most other performances manage fine, but the real surprise is Winner. His unique vocal quality and speaking style in Japanese would have been hard to duplicate, but James Shubert gives an admirable effort in redefining the role without changing its spirit or character. The English script, while not always tight, at least stays consistent in meaning. The weak performances still weight the dub down, but at least Odex Private Limited is showing signs of improvement.

Winner Sinclair does not appear in the manga, so his introduction also marks a diversion from the manga's content, but his presence compensates for some of the side stories that are being skipped so it should not present a major issue for fans of the manga. Deals are sealed, myths about vampires are debunked, and Kenta gets a new romantic rival as the increased humor and improvements to the English dub contribute to a better sophomore outing.

Review:

Darker than BLACK is one of those rare series which is consistently better than it probably should be. It has all of the elements necessary to be a run-of-the mill series about super-powered agents, terrorists, and hoodlums, yet somehow it puts them together into two-episode stories which carry a heavier impact and sharper edge. Lurking behind all of the super-powered antics, bloody violence, and intrigue is one of the year's better series.

Though events continue to play out in two episode mini-arcs, episode 13 also marks the beginning of the series' first overarching plot. With the introduction of Evening Primrose the series now has its first recurring antagonists (although one of the bad guys from the first half of the series does also resurface and continue to be a pain in the butt for Hei) and, finally, a sense of a greater purpose to many of the events that play out, although the direction they take may be somewhat surprising and the truth about who the ultimate bad guys are may be a matter of perspective. The Evening Primrose arc also finally explains in more detail what happened at Heaven's Gate five years earlier and, with its last regular episode, explains what happened with Hei's Contractor sister Pai – and that truth should definitely be a surprise.

These episodes also flesh out the characters more. One two-episode arc gives Huang the feature treatment in much the same way that Yin got such treatment in the first half and the relationship – if you can call it that – between Misaki and November 11 sees further development; imagining those two hooking up in some doujinshi variation is hardly a stretch, and November 11, in the end, is a damn cool character. Mao, sadly, does not get the same consideration beyond the bonus episode, but Gai and Kiko continue to pop up occasionally (if typically inconsequentially) throughout. Amongst new characters, the only one of consequence in terms of development is Amber, but she single-handedly makes up for the lax treatment given the rest of the Evening Primrose members. There is something utterly disarming about that smile of hers in her younger forms and something ineffably sweet about the way she behaves towards Hei and Yin; in fact, she so completely lacks a sinister overtone that it is not hard to believe that she really does still love Hei deeply and see him as much more than just a necessary means to an end. What the price of her power is doing to her, once enough evidence has been set forth for viewers to put two and two together, is nothing short of tragic. Though technically a villainess, she is one of the better new characters introduced so far this year.

For all that the series does right in its writing, though, it does have one notable failure: the ending in episode 25 feels entirely too rushed, especially the way one major character drops out of the picture. Because of that the ending does not pack quite the impact that it should, although it does leave room for a continuation that is coming to Japanese TV this fall.

The series makes up for that with the brilliantly off-the-cuff episode 26, which was originally included only as a bonus episode on the final Japanese DVD release; it never aired on TV. It tells a side story set at some point not long after the arc involving Yin's kidnapping and with a decidedly lighter tone. Learning why Mao hates spring is a hoot, as is Yin's curious new hobby, the whole thing about attractive collarbones, and what the contents of that vial actually do, but the business with the doujinshi is truly inspired. At least one, and maybe two, lines involving it will cause almost anyone to sputter. (Drinking anything while watching this episode is not recommended.)

Studio Bones turns in some sharp action scenes and generally nice character renderings, with Amber's design at younger ages being a particular highlight. Secondary and tertiary characters suffer a bit more on the quality and refinement of their appearances, and the minor inconsistencies in artistic quality control that Bones has always been known for do show up here; in this case, they do sometimes involve less-than-stellar CG effects. Still, the series is hardly hard on the eyes.

With a score by Yoko Kanno, it isn't hard on the ears, either. The regular soundtrack for the second half is not quite as much of a stand-out as it was in the first half but still does the job well, while the shift to a new opener gives the series an energizing, seriously up-tempo rock number to get the series off to a jamming start. The new closer is less remarkable.

The key English dub role in the second half belongs to Laura Bailey as Amber, who had to effectively voice a character at multiple different ages and make her sound convincing in each case. That she pulls it off without a hitch further proves why she is one of the best in the business. Troy Baker also does a commendable job nailing down November 11's distinctive but not overly heavy Brit accent; in the volume 4 commentary track he explains his attention to detail in the way he voiced many key words. Newcomer Bucky Pearl is also exactly on the mark as Dr. Schroeder in the late episodes, as is Kent Williams as Mao, and who else Brandon Potter and Brittney Karbowski would sound right as Gai and Kiko, respectively? Other performances are adequate but less notable. The lesser amount of meddling with the original script compared to the norm for Funimation's dubs continues.

Each volume has Extras which include textless songs, an English audio commentary for one episode, and “production art” that is really more bio, location and equipment files. Volume 4's commentary is for episode 16 and features Troy Baker and Laura Bailey. Volume 5's commentary is for episode 22 and features production staff, while the episode 26 commentary in volume 6 (a curious choice!) features Kent Williams and production staff.

Although it has an occasional light-hearted moment and does parody otaku with its Kiko character, Darker than BLACK is generally a serious and mature tale about super-powered agents playing deadly games with each other while trying to retain some semblance of personal identity. It is sexy with its occasional fan service (one Contractor introduced in these episodes can teleport, but her clothes do not travel with her), offers no shortage of action or violence, and save for a rushed ending typically delivers solid writing. It is not the year's best series, but should be a contender to be ranked amongst the better ones.
